So, today was the first of two EEGs. There will likely be a 24 hour EEG in Charlie's near future. I dropped Walker at a playcare place called "Adventure Kids" and took Charlie down to Children's for the 12:30 appointment. Unlike most of our other appointments, we didn't do any waiting or paperwork - we were simply ushered into a room with an EEG technician for the test. She was pleasant and didn't give any explanation of what she was doing. Here is Charlie fully swaddled and ready for his close-up.
Then the technician started marking little X's on Charlie's head as a guide for the wires. As you can see, Charlie became increasingly suspicious.
Then she started taping down the wires.
Charlie busied himself by holding up his colorful sock and wiggling his toes. His arms were in the little straight-jacket and checking out his feet seemed to be the only thing that he could do.

After this photo was taken, she wrapped his head in gauze and secured it with medical tape. He looked like a little mummy. Poor guy. Once the test began, Charlie (and I) got a little freaked out. Charlie spent the first 45 minutes of the test squealing and screaming. They did most of the test in the dark, and used a flashing strobe light for the first 10 minutes. It reminded me of some scenes from
A Clockwork Orange. Luckily, the technician allowed me to hold Charlie for the final half hour and set his right hand free for some comforting thumb sucking. After it was all over, she washed Charlie's hair and he resumed his calm, sweet demeanor. He even smiled at her when we left. So, while Mommy might be a little scarred from the experience, Charlie seems no worse for the wear.
And here is the last time Charlie had an EEG:
